A 2 carat Portuguese-cut lab-grown diamond carries far more facets than a standard round brilliant, and the result is a busier, finer pattern of light across its face. Eight claws hold it instead of four or six, so the outline stays round and the crown reads as part of the stone rather than a frame around it.

The setting

The basket is open, so light reaches the stone from the sides as well as from above, and cathedral arches carry the head down into the shoulders. The shank is plain rose gold at about 1.6 to 1.8 millimeters, tapering slightly toward the head so the band never competes with the center. There is no hidden halo and there are no peekaboo stones; the cut is left to do the work. With eight contact points each claw can be kept slim, and a single worn claw is far less likely to free the stone than on a four-claw head.

Common questions

Why is the Portuguese cut not in the diamond selector?
The Portuguese cut is an unusual round with extra tiers of facets on the crown and pavilion, and it is not a shape we stock in the Ring Builder. This ring is sold with its 2 ct stone already cut and fitted to the eight-claw head, so the claws are sized to that exact outline.

Do eight claws hide more of the diamond than four?
Each claw covers a sliver of the edge, but with eight they can be made thinner, so the total metal on the stone is similar. The trade-off is more tips to check: have a jeweler look over the claws about once a year, and sooner if one catches on fabric.

Do the photographs show the exact ring I will receive?
The design, the cut and the carat weight, yes. Individual stones vary slightly, and colored stones in particular read differently under daylight and warm indoor light. We photograph your finished ring and send you those images before it ships.
