The band is barely there — a thread of gold — and the pear sits on top of it in a collar so small the stone looks like it is resting on the finger.

The setting

A pear is held point-up in a compact half-collar formed at the top of an extremely fine round shank. There is no head, no gallery and no shoulders: the band goes straight into the setting and comes straight out. Making a wire this fine hold a large stone is a question of work-hardening rather than thickness — the gold is drawn and forged rather than cast, which is what stops it flexing. It is the most minimal ring in the collection and the one that makes a center stone look largest for its weight.

Common questions

Is a band this fine durable?
It is forged rather than cast, so it is springy rather than soft, and thousands of antique rings survive on shanks this thin. It will show wear at the back sooner than a heavier band, and can be re-shanked cheaply when it does.

Will it bend if I knock it?
Out of round, possibly, over years. It pushes back into shape easily. If you work with your hands, one of our heavier settings is the better call.

Do the photographs show the exact ring I will receive?
The setting, yes — those are photographs of this setting made in our workshop. The diamond in them is one specific stone, so a different center stone will not look identical: a heavier one covers more of the finger and sits slightly higher. We photograph every finished ring and send you those images before it ships.
