An oval set straight either runs up the finger or across it. Set at an angle it does neither, and that is what makes this ring hard to place at a glance - the stone appears to have been laid down on the band and left where it fell. Two flat tabs at the ends are all that hold it.

The setting

The band is wide and gently domed rather than flat, so the polished gold either side of the stone curves away and throws a soft band of reflected light along both flanks of the oval. An oval has no corners and no points, which means the tabs can be placed exactly at the two ends where the curve is tightest and hold the stone without covering anything you want to see. The whole thing sits low - the stone rests on the band's top face, not above a gallery - so a heavier oval gains width on the finger rather than height.

Common questions

Will the bowtie in an oval show more at this angle?
Slightly less, if anything. The bowtie is a shadow across the middle of the stone and it is most obvious when you look straight down the long axis; canting the oval means you rarely do. Choose a stone with a length-to-width ratio between 1.35 and 1.50 and it will be minimal in any orientation - we check this on every oval before we set it.

Does the domed band make it harder to stack?
A little. A flat band will touch the dome along one line rather than sitting flush. A second domed or rounded band of similar width pairs with it properly - tell us what you plan to wear alongside and we will advise before you order.

Do the photographs show the exact ring I will receive?
The setting, yes — those are photographs of this setting made in our workshop. The diamond in them is one specific stone, so a different center stone will not look identical: a heavier one covers more of the finger and sits slightly higher.
