An old European cut has a small table, a tall crown and broad, chunky facets, and this 1.5 carat lab-grown diamond shows the wide flashes that come with that recipe. The band is engraved along both sides in floral scrolls with milgrain edges, the way an antique ring would have been finished by hand.

The setting

Six claws rise from a tulip-shaped basket, which follows the round outline and gives the stone more contact points than a four-claw head. Cathedral shoulders lift the head so the engraving can run right up to it without being hidden under the stone. The shank is about 2 millimeters, wide enough for the scrolls to be cut deep enough to stay legible for years. The stone itself is not in the diamond selector: old European faceting follows different proportions from a modern round, so this diamond is supplied with the setting.

Common questions

Will the hand engraving wear away?
Slowly, mostly on the palm side and wherever the ring rubs against another band. A jeweler can recut soft engraving and re-bead worn milgrain, so it is maintainable. Pairing it with a smooth band rather than a stone-set one reduces the rubbing.

How does an old European cut look next to a modern round?
It tends to show larger, slower flashes of light rather than the fine pinpoint sparkle of a modern brilliant. The high crown also makes it look a little taller from the side, which suits the lifted cathedral head.

Do the photographs show the exact ring I will receive?
The design, the cut and the carat weight, yes. Individual stones vary slightly, and colored stones in particular read differently under daylight and warm indoor light. We photograph your finished ring and send you those images before it ships.
