A 1 ct Old European cushion, cut with the broad facets and open culet of antique stones, set on a band only about 1.5mm wide. Four claws hold it at the middle of each side, and a ring of tiny diamonds hides beneath it.

The setting

Old-cut facets break light into larger, slower flashes than a modern brilliant, so the stone glows rather than glitters. Compass claws, centered on each side instead of at the corners, leave the rounded corners of the cushion uncovered and give the head a subtly rotated look. The hidden halo of about 0.8mm rounds sits under the head and shows only from the side. The very fine band keeps the proportions delicate, though it is less robust than a heavier shank. This cut is not offered in the diamond selector; old-style cushions are unusual, so the ring is sold with a stone chosen for it.

Common questions

Are the cushion's corners exposed with compass claws?
Somewhat, yes. With claws at the middle of each side, the corners are free of metal, which shows the old-cut outline fully but leaves them less shielded than in a corner-claw setting. A hard knock on a corner is the main risk, so take the ring off for heavy work.

Is a band this fine strong enough for daily wear?
It is made for everyday wear, but at about 1.5mm it has less metal than a standard band and can bend under heavy pressure. Wearing it with a wedding band helps keep it round, and taking it off for lifting protects both the band and the stone.

Do the photographs show the exact ring I will receive?
The design, the cut and the carat weight, yes. Individual stones vary slightly, and colored stones in particular read differently under daylight and warm indoor light. We photograph your finished ring and send you those images before it ships.

Is the center stone certified?
Yes. Every center stone of 1 carat and above ships with an IGI certificate stating carat, cut, color and clarity. Accent and pave stones are matched to the same color and clarity range but are not individually certified.
