A marquise laid sideways stops looking like a marquise. Turned east-west and set into the Rapture bypass, the stone becomes a long horizontal flash across the finger — closer to a navette in an estate piece than to the pointed vertical solitaires the shape is known for.

The ring

The 1.5ct marquise sits across the finger, its two points tucked into claws at either end where the bypass shank meets the bezel. That is the practical argument for the orientation as well as the aesthetic one: marquise points are the most chip-prone part of the stone, and here they are the part the metal protects most. The half-bezel runs along the lower girdle, so from above you see stone and a thin line of gold, nothing more.

The band

0.65ct of round lab-grown diamonds fill the contoured band, which curves up to meet the underside of the marquise and falls away again toward the shank. The pave sits slightly proud of the metal, so the band throws its own light rather than sitting quietly under the center stone.

Common questions

Why set a marquise east-west instead of the usual way?
Two reasons. It makes the stone read wider and more unusual on the hand, and it moves the fragile points into the protected part of the setting rather than leaving them exposed at the top and bottom.

Are marquise points really that fragile?
They are the thinnest part of any marquise and the part most often chipped. In this setting each point is enclosed by a claw and backed by the bezel, which is about as protected as a marquise gets.

How wide does a 1.5ct marquise sit across the finger?
Around 13–14mm end to end. It covers noticeably more finger than a 1.5ct round.

Does the band work with a different engagement ring?
Only if that ring has a matching contour. This band is cut to the Rapture curve and will leave a gap against a straight-shank solitaire.

Can I have the center in a different carat weight?
