The band tapers up, stops, and the marquise lies across the gap held only by its two points. Seen from the side there is almost nothing there.

The setting

Each end of the shank finishes in a small squared collar that takes one point of the marquise, so the stone lies east-west with both flanks completely open. Covering the points is what a marquise actually needs — they are the thin, chip-prone part of the cut — and here the protection is the setting rather than an addition to it. The band is flat on top and tapers from the back of the finger to the stone, which keeps the profile low enough to wear under a glove.

Common questions

Does a marquise look bigger set east-west?
It looks wider. The stone spans the finger, so the eye reads its full length across the hand rather than up it. For the same carat it is the more dramatic of the two orientations.

Can it take a wedding band flush?
Yes — this is one of the few settings that sits flat against a straight band on both sides, because nothing projects below the stone.

Do the photographs show the exact ring I will receive?
The setting, yes — those are photographs of this setting made in our workshop. The diamond in them is one specific stone, so a different center stone will not look identical: a heavier one covers more of the finger and sits slightly higher.
