A marquise is the longest of the fancy cuts, and setting it on the diagonal is the only way to use that length without it hanging off both sides of the finger. Angled, the two points run corner to corner across the band and the stone occupies the whole width - it looks bigger than the same weight set straight, because nothing is wasted over the edge.

The setting

Two flat tabs do all the holding, one at each point, folded over the tip where a marquise needs metal most. There is no gallery and no under-bezel: the stone lies directly on the top face of the band, which is why it sits so low. The band itself is wide, flat-topped and softly rounded at the edges, and the polished gold either side of the diamond acts as a mirror - on a marquise, with its long flat flanks, that reflection doubles the apparent length of the stone.

Common questions

Are two tabs enough to hold a marquise safely?
They are placed where it counts. The points are the weak part of a marquise and both are capped in metal; the body of the stone is supported along its full length by the flat of the band, so there is nowhere for it to flex. This is a more secure arrangement than a four-claw setting that leaves the tips exposed.

How does it sit under a glove or a sleeve?
Very flat. Because the stone rests on the band rather than above a gallery, total height off the finger is a few millimeters, and the canted angle means there is no leading corner to catch. It is one of the easier diamond rings to wear all day.

Do the photographs show the exact ring I will receive?
The setting, yes — those are photographs of this setting made in our workshop. The diamond in them is one specific stone, so a different center stone will not look identical: a heavier one covers more of the finger and sits slightly higher. We photograph every finished ring and send you those images before it ships.
