A step cut is the calmest shape there is. Here it is set against clusters of small round diamonds that scatter out from both shoulders, so the ring has one still center and a lot of movement around it.

The setting

The emerald cut sits lengthwise in four claws. At each shoulder, round accents in three or four different sizes are bead-set in an irregular cluster that thins as it runs down the band. Mixing the sizes is what stops it looking like a standard graduated pave: the eye reads a scatter, not a sequence. Total accent weight is around 0.30ct. Step cuts show clarity plainly because the facets are large and open, so this setting rewards a higher clarity grade than a brilliant cut of the same size would.

Common questions

What clarity should I choose for an emerald cut?
VS1 or better. An emerald cut has no brilliance to break up the light, so inclusions that would vanish in an oval or round stay visible. This is the one place we would tell you not to save money.

Are the accent sizes really different?
Yes, deliberately. Three or four diameters are used in each cluster. It costs more to set than a uniform line and it is the detail that makes the ring look made rather than assembled.

Do the photographs show the exact ring I will receive?
The setting, yes — those are photographs of this setting made in our workshop. The diamond in them is one specific stone, so a different center stone will not look identical: a heavier one covers more of the finger and sits slightly higher. We photograph every finished ring and send you those images before it ships.

Is the center stone certified?
Yes. Every center stone of 1 carat and above ships with an IGI certificate stating carat, cut, color and clarity. Accent and pave stones are matched to the same color and clarity range but are not individually certified.
