A cushion is a square or rectangle with every corner and edge softened, which is why it is the most comfortable of these six to look at set on the diagonal - there is no sharp corner aimed at the edge of the band, just a rounded shoulder easing toward it. Elongated rather than square, the cut also carries the diagonal better, because it has a long axis to lie along.

The setting

The tabs take the two opposite rounded corners, where the curve gives them something to hug. A cushion's crown is domed and its facets are large, so it throws broad colored flashes rather than fine sparkle, and the mirror-polished band underneath feeds that - light comes up off the gold, into the pavilion and back out of the crown. The stone rests directly on the band's top face, which on a cushion is particularly noticeable: the deep pavilion is completely hidden, and all you see is crown.

Common questions

Why an elongated cushion rather than a square one?
On the diagonal, a square cushion ends up looking like a diamond shape - a tilted square - and the effect is fussier. An elongated cushion keeps a clear long axis, so the eye reads a line rather than a rotated block. We can set a square cushion in this mount if you prefer; ask us first and we will show you both.

The pavilion is hidden. Does that affect brilliance?
It changes where the light comes from rather than how much there is. Light still enters and leaves through the crown, and the polished band under the stone reflects some of it back up. What you lose is the side view of the pavilion, which on a deep cushion is not usually the part people want to see.

Do the photographs show the exact ring I will receive?
The setting, yes — those are photographs of this setting made in our workshop. The diamond in them is one specific stone, so a different center stone will not look identical: a heavier one covers more of the finger and sits slightly higher. We photograph every finished ring and send you those images before it ships.
